Character Education Committee Minutes- Thursday, September 20, 2007
Character Education Committee met Thursday, September 20, 2007, at 7:30 a.m. in the Middle School Library. Those in attendance were Jeremy Watt, Carla Spence, Barb Hodges, Chris Yunick, Jacquie Tosspan, Diane McClain, Shelly Stevens and Teresa Sands.
Diane McClain reported the Character Education account has a balance of $382.08. All cookbooks are now gone. Dave Phinney from HyVee has purchased character education t-shirts to be donated to the elementary students nominated.
The Elementary has its first character education assembly Monday, September 24, at 9 a.m. The 5th grade students write nominations for a community member whom they feel display the character word of the month. The Elementary"s character education committee chooses from the nominations, and they are then recognized at the assembly along with students nominated by teachers. A few teachers will perform a skit to introduce next month’s word, self-control. The high school student nominated during the Thursday, September 20, staff meeting will also be recognized during this assembly. This student will have a chance to speak to the elementary students about the importance of the character word of the month. They will also be presented a $50 savings bond from Great Western Bank and be eligible during their senior year for the Character Education Scholarship. The Middle School has its first assembly Wednesday, September 26, at 12:00 p.m. They too will recognize student and community members who display “responsibility.”
Barb Hodges reported 17 character education shirts were ordered by staff and will be here shortly. Jean coupons purchased by staff totaled $775.00. $435 will be donated to the Anti-Meth Coalition of Putnam County and $440 will be donated to Green Hills Community Action Agency.
Project Wisdom will officially begin Monday, September 24. In case you haven’t heard- Project Wisdom helps us begin our day with words of encouragement. Sheryl Riley will be reading the daily message. This will be district wide. All faculty are encouraged to register on the project wisdom web site. If we have more than 21 staff register, our school’s PTO has a chance to receive $800. Mrs. Hodges sent out a sheet explaining how to register.
Barb Hodges and Carla Spence will be in charge of our Character Education recognition nights Dec. 17 and 18. The profit from the concession will go toward the scholarship. A middle school and high school athlete will be recognized and given a prize during the game. Games/activities are in the planning process.
Mrs. Yunick and some of her Junior High Honor Society members spent last Saturday, September 15, landscaping outside the school. We greatly appreciate their efforts!!
Mrs. Spence will put the Character Education Scholarship announcement in the high school bulletin. She suggested that we also give the monthly high school winner a pin or medal to put on their letter jacket. All attending thought that was a good idea, and we will start purchasing those.
Teresa Sands gave a review on Red Ribbon/Character Education Week plans. This is the week of October 22-26. Suggestions were made to have students and parents nominate staff for good character. During this week, a box, paper and pen will be available in each building for students to nominate at their discretion. Parents will be able nominate during P/T Conferences. On Friday, which is a teacher workshop day, a name will be chosen from each box and presented with a prize.
The Hands project will kick off its year October 14-21 in the Middle and Elementary schools. Mrs. Yunick started this in the Middle School last spring and will introduce it to the Elementary during their Character Education Assembly. She plans on giving parents the choice of taking the hands pledge during the P/T conferences.
October’s character word is Self- Control. We feel our Character Education is off to a great start. Please join us for our next meeting at 7:30 a.m. in the Middle School Library on Thursday, October 18. Hope to see you there!!!!
