Accelerating the Reader

by Sheryl Riley

October 26, 2007

When students are excited about reading, something magical happens!

The Accelerated Reader Program promotes independent reading through motivational quizzes that encourage appropriate reading levels and growth.

Students choose books from the school library that are designated by the yellow Accelerated Reader sticker on the spine, indicating an available quiz.

After reading a book completely, students are allowed to take a quiz that measures reading ability and comprehension, the two very important components of reading. Once the quiz is finished and the taker has received a passing score, he or she is then allowed to view missed questions and the correct answers. An evaluation is automatically printed for the classroom teacher. The students receive a free book report, providing the book is on or above grade level or on the student’s personal reading level.

The Accelerated Reader program is offered to grades first through fifth. Students are excited about taking Accelerated Reader quizzes and receiving immediate feedback. The program helps students practice more effectively, be more challenged in their reading, and provide teachers with reliable objective information.

Encourage your child today to become an Accelerated Reader, and remember the journey of reading is the true reward.
