Gov. Mat Blunt announced December 26 that 16 trail projects in Missouri would receive approximately $1,102,593 in funding through the federal Recreational Trails Program. Putnam County R-I School District is proud to announce that it was chosen as one of the 16 Missouri project sites. This grant program is for trail-related land acquisition, development or restoration. PC R-I was one of 57 applicants, and the only public school district to be awarded the grant in the amount of $99,853.
The PC R-I project, Putnam Prairie Trail, will consist of a paved recreational trail east of the present softball field and south of the practice football field. The trail will be handicap accessible with lights, benches and bathroom facilities. The vision for the project includes planting of natural prairie flowers and grasses, native to northern Missouri. This project will offer an outdoor recreational opportunity for the citizens of Putnam County that is currently not available anywhere else within the county. Our students will also benefit greatly from this addition with opportunities for outdoor classrooms.
Local partners in this project include the Board of Aldermen of the City of Unionville; Boy Scouts, Troop 88; P.E.O., Chapter A; the services of a local Missouri Master Gardener and the PC Vocational-Ag students; and the expertise and direction of the Agriculture Department, Building Trades Department, and the PC Maintenance Department. We appreciate the willingness of our partners to provide financial support and/or talents and expertise to bring this vision into a reality for the citizens of Putnam County.
