My Best Deer Hunt     by Hunter

Click...click....BAM!  "Did I get her?  Did I get her?"  That's what I was thinking on a Sunday afternoon in October.  It was the last day of youth deer season.  My dad, my brother Casey, and I went to my Uncle Dude's field on the timber line.  That's when it all had happened.

It all began when my family got home from church and went to see our cousins at Grandma and Grandpa's house.  We had Sunday dinner and hurried home.  My mom had to watch our other cousins.  On the way home I asked, "Dad, can we go deer hunting?"

He said, "Yes, but we will have to hurry."

Then Dad, Casey, and I got on our camo coats and orange vests.  We got the 243 and went to get in the truck.  We drove to our Great-Uncle Dude's field.  It was about two miles away.  When we got there, I loaded the gun.  We walked to a hay lot about 200 yards from the timber line.  We sat, and sat, and sat!  About an hour passed.  It was almost dark when I saw two does.  I raised my gun and took my best shot.  Click...click...BAM!  I wondered, "Did I get her?  Did I get her?"

A second later, after the gun shot, the two does tore out on a run.  The little deer ran about 20 yards and tripped.  I got ready to shoot again when Dad whispered, "Don't shoot!  That is the one you shot."  Dad, Casey, and I waited about 15 or 20 minutes.  My heart was flopping like a fish out of water.  Then we went to field dress her.  Ends up I had forgotten my tag at home, so Mom had to load up my cousins and get my tag to give to me.  She brought the tag, and Dad, Casey, and I went to fetch my deer.  We took her home and hung her in the garage.

To summarize, shooting the doe was an awesome experience.  I learned to always take the best shot.  From then on, I have loved to go hunting.  Deer, turkey, squirrel, you name it.  I love to hunt!
