S.P.R.I.N.T. Quiz Bowl

The Putnam County 5th-8th grades quiz bowl teams participated in the annual S.P.R.I.N.T. Academic Bowl Tournament, Saturday, January 12, 2008, at Scotland County School in Memphis, Missouri. The teams were divided into two divisions; Division I had 5th and 6th grade teams and Division II had 7th and 8th grade teams entered. Each grade competed in their division with 20 teams from surrounding schools. All teams competed in a round robin tournament during the morning, with each P.C. team playing four matches. The games are played in halves of 30 toss-up questions. Each question is worth ten points. Eight teams from each division advanced to the Championship Bracket for afternoon play.
Members of the 8th grade team are Dillon, Josh, Jake, Ty, Mary, and Derek. This Division II team went 2-2, defeating North Shelby 220-200 and Monroe City 210-70. They lost to Brashear 180-260 and Knox County 330-130.
Members of the seventh grade team went 3-1 in the preliminary rounds, winning games against Brashear 330-60, North Shelby 290-70, and Marion County 250-80. They lost to Scotland County B 180-330. Their record allowed them to move on to the championship round where they were defeated by Palmyra 340-60. Members of the team are Brett, Craig, Riley, Myles, Allen, and Levi.
The sixth grade team consisting of Christian, Kristen, Rachel, Drake, Allen, and Tamara went 1-3 in their preliminary games, defeating Green City 150-130, and losing to Palmyra, Knox County, and North Shelby.
The fifth grade team went 0-4 in their preliminary games, losing in overtime to Brashear 140-150 and Monroe City 170-180. They were also defeated by Lewis County 110-240 and Schuyler County 130-160. Members of the team included Will, Chase, Joey, Logan, Haley, Joseph, and Kelsie.
The fifth, sixth, and seventh grade teams also played in the Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl. Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl is a computer team competition. The students answer 100 multiple-choice questions in the areas of math, geography, government, sports, spelling, science, literature, English, history, general information, and trivia. The supervising teacher then calls in the score at the end of the contest. All schools that competed within the state are ranked by high score and grade level. The fifth grade quiz bowl members placed 18th, scoring 896 points with 72% correct. The sixth grade was ranked sixth and scored 88% correct with 1149 points. The seventh grade was ranked sixth and scored 969 points with 79% correct.
