PC R-1 IS GETTING READY FOR LIFT-OFF!
National School Breakfast Week, March 3-7, 2008

Before lifting off on a space mission or sitting down to write a story, astronauts and authors alike must eat a balanced breakfast. To boost participation and excite students about fueling their bodies to power their minds, I am launching the "FUEL YOUR IMAGINATION" campaign, with the help of the School Nutritional Association. This campaign is brought to you with the aim of highlighting the link between eating a healthy school breakfast, reaching for the stars and achieving your dreams.
WHY EAT BREAKFAST? School breakfast is the most important meal of the day and provides necessary fuel to start a day of learning and achievement. Research has shown the children who eat breakfast at school score better in standardized tests, have fewer health issues and behave better in class. Research also shows that kids who skip breakfast rarely make up for missed nutrients later in the day. Eating breakfast at school helps ensure a smooth lift-off to a day filled with learning and achievement. On any given day, 51% of kids go to school without breakfast.
FUEL YOUR IMAGINATION COUNTDOWN - There are galaxies of reasons why students should get involved in "Fuel Your Imagination". Read through the countdown and be prepared for lift-off!
5) Vote for your favorite spaceship in our Rocket Race. The winning rocket based on votes will blast off to a Planet Pizza Party.
4) Go where no man (or woman, or kid) has gone before with the Creative Writing Contest.
3) Blast-off your comments - what do you think about school breakfast?
2) Are you on the same planet? Take our Planetary Poll and find out.
1) Enjoy a healthy and nutritional school breakfast.
ABOUT THE ROCKET RACE - A rocket can't function without fuel, and neither can a child. Mr. Dover and Mrs. Partridge have been kind enough to get involved with the students in building the following spaceships: Lunar Eggsplorer, Breakfast Blaster, Cereal Shuttle, Pancake Launcher, Bagelstar Galactica and Sausage Saucer. A spaceship will be assigned to each grade level and will be displayed in each of the schools in honor of National School Breakfast week March 3rd-7th. The spaceships will be racing into outer space searching for Planet Pizza Party. To provide fuel for their spaceship, students may earn "rocket fuel credits" from the lunch ladies for participating in the following events during the week:
1. Eating breakfast at school - Enter a breakfast fueled universe, the easiest way to earn a "rocket fuel credit".
2. Bringing a guest to join them for school breakfast - Show an alien visitor how to launch off their day with a nutritious school breakfast. ELEMENTARY STUDENTS ONLY.
3. Sampling the "Fear Factor" vegetable of the day. MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL ONLY.
4. Submitting a blast-off comment to the lunch ladies.
5. Completing a breakfast activity sheet.
6. Entering the creative writing contest.
7. Taking the Planetary Poll - Provide input to the lunch ladies to ensure they are preparing your favorite breakfast meals and providing the best service possible.
8. Tasty Trivia - Try your luck each morning at our trivia question. MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL ONLY.
