Middle School Math Contest

by June Ann Ledford

February 27, 2008

From the desk of Mrs. Ledford, Middle School math teacher:

This is the time of the year when students are preparing for spring math contests.  Again, this year I am going to take students to the NCTM Regional math contests; the sixth graders will compete at Macon, Missouri, on Saturday, March 29, 2008, and the seventh and eighth grade students will compete at Brookfield, Missouri, on March 15, 2008.

The sixth graders will take two 30 minute tests.  One test is concentrated on mathematics concepts and the other is on problem solving.  Both tests will be short answer questions.  Those participating are Kristen, Kaisee, Jacey, and Tyler .

The seventh and eighth graders in regular math classes will take only one test and it will be problem solving questions where they must use their knowledge of mathematics concepts.  Those competing in these tests are Craig, Michael , and Levi (seventh graders), along with Elizabeth, Ty , and Skyler (eighth graders).  The eighth graders enrolled in Algebra I will take a different test which will require them to apply their skills in Algebra.  Those competing in this contest are Jake, Joetta, and Derek .

The seventh and eighth graders will also have a team consisting of four individuals who competed in the individual tests.  This team will compete against teams from all of the other school who are represented at the contest.

In all three grades,  students who place First, Second, and Third will qualify to compete at the State contest later in the spring.

Mrs. Valentine  and I will tutor these students and will also accompany them to their testing sites.
