6th Grade Reading/English Update

by Jana Young

March 13, 2008

Reading

6th grade reading students have been reading short stories from a unit in their books entitled "Biography and Autobiography:  Unforgettable Personalities."  The students have met Hans Christian Andersen, Gary Paulsen, Maya Angelou, Huynh Quang Nhuong, and Harriet Tubman during this unit.  We will conclude the unit right before Easter break.

English

The students have had a break from spelling words the past few weeks.  We will begin with new words on March 24.  Look for those words to be posted sometime next week.

We've been working on a unit on subject/verb agreement for the past three weeks.  The students have learned that what may SOUND right when they read a sentence may not BE right.  They have a chart to refer to when figuring out whether a singular or plural verb is needed.  They've actually gotten quite good at figuring things out, but I often have to remind them to use what they know!

After Easter break, we will begin a writing unit.  This unit ties in with the reading unit we are just finishing.  The students will be writing a short research paper that is a biography.  The biography will be written about a person who is currently famous.  This encourages the students to find new information on someone they're interested in, and it also gives me a chance to learn about some new people!  The students will have to find at least two sources for information when doing their research.  We will try to use the computers at school during class time as much as possible, but those who have computers at home may want to do a little researching there as well.  I will probably share some of these papers on the web site at a later date.
