Elementary Recycling & Collection Projects

by Sheryl Riley

April 17, 2008

Have you ever been accused of saving things? Here is a way that you can quench that desire to save and help your school out at the same time. Putnam County R-1 Elementary is saving a variety of things that will help them gain new technology for their school.

For several years Mrs. Riley, Library Media Specialist in the Elementary, has been asking local businesses and community members to save empty computer printer ink and laser cartridges for a recycling project through Funding Factory.

Each cartridge is given points based on its worth and those points can be used to purchase equipment and materials through a catalog or points can be turned in to dollar amounts to help fund major school purchases.

Mrs. Riley is in hopes of updating library technology so that all elementary students may benefit.

In addition  to saving cartridges, Mrs. Riley is also the lead coordinator for the school's BoxTops for Education project and Campbell Soup Label collection. BoxTops are found on a variety of consumer products from taco shells to toilet paper.

Mrs. Riley is challenging her community to help her in this worthwhile project that benefits students by enhancing learning. If you would consider saving for these recycling and collection projects, you may drop off at the elementary school, send with a student, drop off at AppleSeeds, or call Mrs. Riley at 947-2494, ext.327, between 7:30 am- 8:00 am or 3:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m. for more information.

Thank you for supporting your local school!
