BACKPACK INFORMATION
A letter with a parent survey form and field trip permission form was sent home today in your child’s backpack. Please complete the forms and return by Monday, May 5, if at all possible. The field trip has been planned for Saturday, June 7, 2008, from 10:00-4:00 p.m. I have to order tickets by Tuesday, May 6th, so please send your permission form so your child may be included in the field trip.
FINAL SCHOOL YEAR FAMILY NIGHT ACTIVITY
The final Family Night Activity for this school year has been scheduled for Monday, May 5, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. All family members should meet in the middle school commons for ice cream sundaes before going to the Middle School Auditorium for a presentation by the S.O.A.R. students.
The students have been working on a unit and they want to share the highlights with you, their parents. Also, last but not least, we will have the drawing for the DVD player and other prizes (your attendance at previous family night activities has provided additional chances to win). You must be present to win.
OPEN HOUSE FOR PUTNAM CO. R-I EDUCATION BUILDING
The Putnam Co. R-I School District is proud to announce the upcoming Putnam Co. R-I Educational Center Open House on Monday, May 5, 2008 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. The newly completed Putnam Co. R-I Educational Building is home to the Building Trades Department/classroom, S.O.A.R Before and Afterschool Program, Parents As Teachers and Head Start. All are cordially invited to walk through the building. Please do not arrive early as parents will be checking students in and out of S.O.A.R.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEK
Where do you go when you want to learn about fitness? If you were to ask the Putnam County S.O.A.R. students they might tell you to go to the top—the superintendent, that is. The S.O.A.R. students met with Mr. Halley in the Fitness Center Thursday afternoon so that he could tell them about the equipment that is available and discuss fitness and health with them.
Mr. Halley is very disciplined when it comes to fitness and instructed the students about the importance of safety and fueling their bodies with good nutritious snacks and meals. He was asked one particular question which I’m sure has been in the thoughts of everyone that has observed him during his workouts in the Fitness Center--“Mr. Halley, did you ever think about becoming a wrestler?” Fortunately for Putnam County his response was “No.”
This time with the superintendent was a great opportunity for our young students to see Mr. Halley from a different perspective. In the future I plan to have several others from the community visit our classroom.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Mrs. Jane McDonald will be visiting the S.O.A.R. classroom soon to begin a unit of study on mural painting. She will instruct and guide our students in “decorating” the front entryway of the Education Building.
FIELD TRIP
A field trip has been planned for the S.O.A.R. students on Saturday, June 7, 2008 from 10:00-4:00 p.m. We will be taking the students to Kirksville where they will have time to play at the park, have a picnic and spend a couple of hours at the Kirksville Aquatic Center for an afternoon of swimming and fun! I have to get the tickets ordered by May 6, 2008 so please get your child’s permission slip to my office by that date so that tickets may be purchased for them. There will be NO cost to the families—all transportation, food and swimming will be paid for by the S.O.A.R. Program.
FINAL THOUGHTS
One Hundred Years from now
(excerpt from "Within My Power" by Forest Witcraft)
One Hundred Years from now
It will not matter
what kind of car I drove,
What kind of house I lived in,
how much money was in my bank account
nor what my clothes looked like.
But the world may be a better place because
I was important in the life of a child.
