Dissecting Owl Pellets

Summer School Fun!!

by Diane McClain

June 05, 2008

The 4th and 5th grade students are learning and having a lot of fun at summer school. The students are reading a book entitled Owls in the Family. In reading the story, the students have learned that when owls eat they swallow the entire animal and then cough up the bones and fur, which is an owl pellet.

Speed Stacks!!

The students worked in small groups and dissected actual owl pellets this week, and then using a bone chart were able to determine what the owls had consumed. It was an interesting lesson, and their work is on display in the elementary glass display cabinet.

In the afternoon the students have enrichment classes which include speed-cup stacking. This sport helps to develop hand-eye coordination, motor skills and requires students to think, using both sides of their brains--not to mention, it is a fun sport for all ages.
