Swimming, hiking, fishing, planting and caring for a garden, going to the movies, and going bowling are just some of the many summer activities that are being enjoyed by the Putnam County S.O.A.R. Before and Afterschool students. Learning for young and old is a constant process. The students have enjoyed units of study on recycling and space. A new unit of study is introduced each week. Future units will include studying the country of Greece, the country of Mexico, the Olympics, and baseball, just to name a few.
July 10 was set aside for before and afterschool programs across the nation to celebrate “National Summer Learning Day.” The Putnam County S.O.A.R. Before and Afterschool Program invited members of its advisory council, its community partners, school administrators, members of the school board, the Unionville Republican, and students and parents to join in an evening to celebrate this special national observance.
The S.O.A.R. students have been working diligently throughout the summer on a new Reader’s Theatre curriculum which was designed to assist children in improving their fluency and reading skills. They presented their plays at the celebration and talked about all the things that they have been learning throughout the summer program. The evening was concluded with root beer floats.
