Reading
We'll begin a new story next week called "The Stone." So far we've been reading and discussing the stories together in class. This is giving me the opportunity to listen to the students read and helping me to find their strengths and weaknesses. Their participation in discussion helps me to discover their depth of comprehension. We'll be ready for the selection test over "The Stone" on Thursday, unless the shortened period on Wednesday doesn't allow us to get all of our discussion in. Vocabulary words for this story are as follows:
delved - dug
gaped - stared with one's mouth open
plight - bad situation
obliged - forced
jubilation - rejoicing; great joy
rue - regret
mired - sunk; stuck
fallow - left unplanted
On Friday, all students will be taking the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test. This test has two sections: Vocabulary and Comprehension. This test provides a general level of reading achievement for the students. I will send you the results of the test when they are completed.
English
We're still working with subjects and predicates in this class. The students are finally getting it all figured out! We'll do some reviewing next week of this topic, then get into types of sentences. I had planned to begin spelling tests next week, but since we'll need to take one section of the Gates reading test during English period on Friday, we won't have time for spelling. We'll start spelling words during the week of September 15th. I'll give you the words now, but the test over these words won't be until Friday, September 19th.
