Writing Can Be Fun!!

by Gayla Whitworth

October 29, 2008

Grumble, Grumble, Groan, Groan!! That is a typical sound coming from a third grader when you slightly mention starting the writing lesson for the day.  BUT, writing can be fun and it is very important!!  Children find it much easier to write about something of which they are familiar. The writing topic needs to have meaning to them.

As a teacher, I am asking for your support in encouraging your child to write at home.  As a parent, I do hear your grumble, grumble, groan, groan.  The Internet is a great source for some writing ideas.  I googled writing prompts and came  up with some great ideas.  Here are some writing suggestions.

~Imagine Superman visited you and gave you the power to fly.  Write a story telling about what happens when you have the power to fly.

~Imagine you are playing and one of your toys comes to life.  Write a story about what happens when your toy comes to life.

~Think about a time you did something really special with your mom, dad, or another adult.  Write a story about what you did with that adult.

~Imagine that a spaceship has landed on the school's playground.  The door of the spaceship slowly opens.  Write a story about what happens next.

There are soo many more ideas. If you need more, please let me know.  There is another fun web-site for kids I found.  It is www.geocities.com/kinderxpress/third grade.html.  This site has online math games as well as other fun educational activities.

You can get a cheap notebook and have your child decorate to make it special to them.  Bad weather days are good times to have your child do some writing.  At night before they go to bed, they can write about their day.

If we work together, we can make some of these grumbles and groans go away.  It's not going to be easy, but it will be rewarding to see their success as a writer soar!!
