Summer School Blows Its Top
MS Science Studies Plate Tectonics, Volcanoes & Earthquakes
by Andrew Garber
June 17, 2009
Mr. Garber's middle school classes investigated the plate tectonic theory and how it affects earthquakes and volcanoes. The classes started with a web quest that can be found on Mr. Garber's web site < http://putnam.k12.mo.us/garber/ >. The class developed and gave their own power point presentations to the rest of the class. Then students designed, built and decorated their own volcanoes. They used paper mache, paint, glitter, food coloring and more to decorate their creations. They created villages, roads, tunnels and more on their mountains. Students learned about chemical reactions, physical changes and chemical changes. The grand finale included arranging students in the shape of the Pacific Ring of Fire and setting off their volcanic eruptions using a chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda.

The students had a lot of fun with this project.
