June 27, 2009
Need motivation to stay with an exercise plan? The Putnam County R-1 School now has a walking trail over a half mile long on their grounds. The school, in collaboration with the Putnam County Health Department, Putnam County Memorial Hospital, and other community partners, will be holding a kick-off event to celebrate the completion of Prairie Trail on July 15 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Attend the event for the ribbon cutting ceremony, enter for a
prize drawing, register for a seven-week group walk, and experience
the trail. The first 50 participants to register for the group walk
will receive a pedometer and walking journal to track their
steps.
The health department and hospital will be facilitating the 2009
Summer Family Walk for seven weeks beginning the following Tuesday,
July 21. The walk will occur on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at
5:45 am and evenings at 5:15 pm. Weekly healthy lifestyle tips will
be distributed. The walks will begin with light stretching and
serve as a weekly social support to help sustain increased physical
activity. Children are welcome under the supervision of their
parents.
The trail is located southeast of the school near the ball diamonds. Participants should meet in the softball parking lot for the kick-off event and stretching prior to the walking sessions. There is now handicap accessible parking at this location. To preregister for the walk contact Gigi Pettengill at the health department: 947-2429 ext 28, or email pettea@lpha.mopublic.org.
Thanks to Shelter Insurance for donating the pedometers and to North Central Missouri Electric Company for donating money to purchase the walking journals.
