Putnam County Quiz Bowl is Underway

The Putnam County 5th-8th grades quiz bowl teams participated in the annual S.P.R.I.N.T. Academic Bowl Tournament Sat., Jan. 16, at Scotland County School in Memphis, MO. The teams were divided into two divisions: Division I had 5th and 6th grade teams, and Division II had 7th and 8th grade teams entered. Each division included 20 teams from area schools. All teams competed in a round robin tournament during the morning, with each P.C. team playing four matches. The games are played in halves of 30 toss-up questions. Each question is worth ten points. Eight teams from each division advanced to the Championship Bracket for afternoon play.
The Putnam County 8th graders advanced to the Championship Bracket, losing to Clark County, which made their record for the day 3-2. In the preliminary rounds they won against Monroe City, 220-130, Scotland Co. B, 270-210, Palmyra 210-200 and lost to Lewis County 150-260. Their members are Christian, Rachel, Drake and Jacey. Kristen and Allen are also on the team but were not in attendance that day.
The 7th graders team consists of Haley, Anna, Logan, Willem and Joseph. Although they went 0-4 that day, they fought hard and did a great job. Scores were verses Knox Co. 160-190, Marion County 180-240, Clark 80-330, and Kirksville, 170-240.
The 6th grade team members include Kyle , Courtney, Katey , Julia, Alexis, and Claire . These kids lost in a tie-breaker to Brashear, 130-140 and then lost to Monroe 140-150, and Green City 170-240 but won strong against Knox Co. A, 150-110.
The 5th grade also fought hard that day going 1-3 with a bye in the first round and then losing to Scotland Co. 70-300, Marion County 90-100, and North Shelby 120-240. Team members include Tanner, Zach, Angela, Logan, Emerald and Ashlyn, Trevor and Jordan.
