by Melissa Schmidli

February 13, 2010

Claire, a sixth grade student at the Putnam County Middle School, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on January 14, 2010, and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 22nd annual National Geographic Bee. This year’s Bee is sponsored by the Google. Drake, 8th grade, placed second, and Sara, 5th grade, placed third. Other contestants included Joel and Ian, 4th grade; Calvin, 5th grade; Justin, 6th grade; Joseph and Austin, 7th grade; and Jacob, 8th grade.

Anyone can test their knowledge of geography with GeoBee Challenge, an online geography quiz at www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee, which poses 10 new questions a day.

“Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek will moderate the national finals on May 26. The program will air on television. Check local listings for dates and times.
