FFA Members Advance to State with Proficiency Awards

by Randy Morris

February 18, 2010

The Area III FFA Proficiency Awards selections were held February 17th, 2010 in Edina.  Six members of the Putnam County FFA submitted 7 applications to be judged against other applicants from the Area III FFA Association.

There are 50 proficiency award areas in which students can apply.  Proficiency awards are based on each student’s Supervised Agriculture Experience Program (SAEP).   SAE programs are the student’s project or job outside of the school setting.

SAE programs are either placement (working for someone), or entrepreneurship in nature.  The applications and the student’s record book are reviewed by area agriculture instructors and placed accordingly after being scored.

The following FFA members from Putnam County placed first and will advance to state competition:  Jessica L., Beef Production Placement; Nyle K., Turf Grass Management Placement; Daniel M., Forestry Products and Management.

Other FFA members with applications that competed and placed were:  Jessica L., 2nd Dairy Production Entrepreneurship; Cole Y., 2nd Agricultural Services Placement; Niki C., 4th Agricultural Processing; and Sara G., 6th Agricultural Sales Placement.

The three area winning applications will be sent to state for further review by a state committee.  The students will attend the State FFA Convention in April, where a state winner will announced.  All three area winners will receive a plaque at state convention for their accomplishment.
