The Putnam County FFA Chapter celebrated National FFA Week with several activities during the week of February 22-26th, 2010. On Tuesday, February 23, several FFA members talked to the 8th graders as part of the 8th grade recruitment program. During this presentation the FFA members talked to the 8th graders about the benefits of joining FFA and about the various classes that are offered through the agriculture education program. At the end of the presentation, prizes were given to a few students that answered questions correctly.
On Wednesday, February 24, the FFA held there annual Teacher/Businessman Appreciation breakfast from 6:30 am to 8:00 am in the agriculture shop. FFA members cooked pancakes and sausage for the community supporters of our FFA chapter as a way of saying thank you for their support. About 40 guests were served that morning as well as the 50 FFA members that helped.
On Wednesday, February 26, the FFA chapter held the Agriculture Olympics in the agriculture shop from 6-8pm. Six teams of six people each competed in games. The events that the FFA members competed in were: wheel barrel race, corn shelling, ping pong tournament, hay bale toss, and baby bottle chugging. The winners in each category were: Sara G, Ping Pong; Jessica, Bottle Chugging; Kyle G, Corn Shelling; Daniel M, Bale Toss; Tyler S and Alex M, Wheel Barrel Race. The overall team champions were: Courtney G, Jessica L, Cole Y, Sara G, Katie R and Daniel M. Also during the evening, members volunteered to ride the bucking barrel. Those that rode were timed to see who could ride the barrel the longest. The winner for the girls was Kailee S and the boy’s winner was Jesse A.
The next activity conducted was Thursday, February 25. This activity was the Food for America program with the 3rd graders. For this activity FFA members visited the 3rd grader classrooms and talked to them about FFA and the importance of agriculture. They then made butter by shaking cream in glass jars. The butter was then sampled by the classes.
The final activity of FFA week was the annual Barnyard/Petting Zoo held on Friday, February, 26. Several FFA members brought in farm animals for the elementary students to see. Animals included: sheep, pigs, mule, horse, pony, dogs, goats, rabbits, chickens and cats. This activity allows non-farm students the chances to see and pet farm animals.
