National Junior Honor Society's Induction Ceremony

by Staci Kaster

March 01, 2010

The middle school’s National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) inducted 31 new charter members on Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 in the middle school auditorium.  The process to become a member starts by the Faculty Council reviewing any second semester 7th grade and any 8th grade student, who is currently not a member with a 3.5 cumulative GPA.  After that each possible nomination must also be representative of the 5 values that the NJHS holds in high esteem.  Each one must show the values of character, leadership, service, scholarship, and citizenship.
Once that process has been completed, a tapping ceremony is held where the students find out they have been nominated.  The tapping ceremony was held on Thursday, February 11th. Up until this time the students had no idea who had been nominated.  This was held during T.A. in the middle school auditorium.  The lights were shut off with only the spotlight on the T.A. teacher and the student being nominated.  The T.A. teacher then walks down the row behind his or her student and taps the prospective member on the shoulder.  It is a very neat experience to witness.
After the tapping ceremony is the formal induction ceremony, which was held on the next Tuesday, February 16th.  The current members of the NJHS put together the induction ceremony for the upcoming members.   Along with planning the induction ceremony, the current members also have individual parts that they are responsible for through the induction.     Some of the jobs include speaking parts, escorting, programming, lighting, and serving refreshments.  Each current member did a beautiful job making the induction ceremony a success.
At the induction ceremony, inductees have their name called;  walk onto the stage and light their individual candles which represents their induction into NJHS.  After the entire ceremony is completed, family members and all members were invited to stay for cake and punch.
