Jeff Butler Teacher of the Year!
One of our own, middle school teacher Jeff Butler, was recognized today in front of a cheering student body as a Missouri Teacher of the Year. Presenting the award, a book for the library and honorarium of $500 to Mr. Butler was "Butch" Whittler from the Missouri State Teachers Association. Mr. Whittler remarked that their choice from among the many teachers nominated may have been influenced by Jeff's bringing along one of his many props used in his Social Studies classroom. Mr. Butler is well known by students for his use of costumes and whatever else it takes to make learning engaging and never boring. The interview team at MSTA quickly discovered, as has many a middle school student, that Mr. Butler has a sincere interest in his subject and his students.
Members of the faculty nominated Mr. Butler for this honor at the beginning of the school year. He and other nominees then a filled out questionnaires including a philosophy of education in February. In March he and other finalists traveled to Columbia, Missouri where they were interviewed by a group of twelve. Today's award was actually a surprise to Mr. Butler (and a relief to those keeping the matter a secret!). On May 3rd, Jeff and his family will again be honored at a MSTA banquet in La Plata.
Congratulations to Mr. Butler!
