DICTIONARIES FOR THIRD GRADERS

by Angie O'Reilly

October 26, 2009

The Unionville Rotary’s Club motto is “Service Above Self.” The Rotary is dedicating itself to promoting literacy through the donation of student dictionaries.

Nancy Flood and James Garner, members of the Unionville Rotary Club, visited each third grade classroom and presented each student with a personal dictionary inscribed with the Unionville Rotary Club, its motto, and the student’s name.

Mrs. Flood discussed the importance of pride and responsibility with one’s possessions. She also asked the students about using the dictionary. She then talked about the importance of reading and writing, not only in school, but in life.

Mr. Garner had the students find the definition for TEAM, and the students discussed different “teams” from sports teams to clubs to teacher teams to classroom teams. He also stressed the importance of teams working together to achieve goals.

The students were surprised and delighted with this gift, and they have been using their dictionaries in their classrooms. Many are reading the reference materials included in the back of the dictionary, as well as looking up word definitions and checking spelling. Students will be taking their dictionaries home later in the year.

The third grade students, parents, and teachers want to thank the Unionville Rotary Club and its members for their generous gift.
