December 15, 2009

This year’s annual FFA Coon Hunt was held on Saturday, December 5, 2009. Twelve teams competed with approximately 72 participants. Registration began at 4:30 p.m. and lasted until 6:30 p.m. After all the team fees were paid, the hunt began.
All teams were required to be back by 11:30 p.m. for check-in. This year 92 coons were brought in by all the teams. During check-in the participants could enjoy chili, hot dogs, chips, and cookies brought in by FFA members.
The coon hunt champions were Dakota V, Darien V, Jacob V, C.L. V, Dathan, and Brandon S. Their team brought in 25 coons. This team also brought in the most opossums with a total of 2. The team bringing in the largest coon was Trenton M, Skyler H, Klayton M, Ty N, and Deion H. The coon weighed 20.5 pounds. The smallest coon was brought in by Nyle K, Rick G, Wayne R, and Emily R. It weighed 5 pounds.
Competitors were also allowed to compete in a coon skinning contest. In the adult division, Doug Hyle was the winner with a time of 1 minute 7 seconds. In the student division, Dathan H was the winner with a time of 2:55.
Putnam County FFA would like to thank all the local businesses and community members who donated door prizes. Your support is very much appreciated.
