EVENTS THIS WEEK

Reading, reading, reading…a whole lot of reading has been going on at the S.O.A.R. Program.  And, with the reading comes completion of more book reports.  Please encourage your children to work hard during the allotted book report times so that all of them will achieve their Gold Reading Certificates and earn their field trip at the end of the year.  Good job.  Way to go kids!!!!

The students have also had the opportunity to play several new games recently at the S.O.A.R. Program.   Weather conditions and changing seasons often determine the choice of games we do play with our children.  We encourage every child to participate in every game and/or activity while at the S.O.A.R. Program.    There are so many things—in addition to the sheer fun of playing the games—that teach good sportsmanship, how to be a “good” winner, how to be a “good” loser, the importance of following the rules, and the importance of taking turns, just to name a few.  Several students automatically want to “sit out” when we announce that we will be playing games.  And, many surprise us with their game skills.

I think the electronic age of computers, X-Box, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation 3 is robbing our children of many group learning opportunities that promote good people skills, increased physical endurance and mental growth.  Though I am not promoting erasing the electronic wonders from the premises, I do think there are enormous learning opportunities from both avenues.  We appreciate your children and will continue to expose them to activities and enrichment activities that will broaden their perspectives and let them have FUN while learning.

NATIONAL CONVENTION

Next week part of the S.O.A.R. staff will be at the national convention.  They will be getting new ideas, resources and suggestions to make the rest of our school year, the summer school program and extended program successful.  If you should have questions or need to talk to Mrs. Fischgrabe you may call Mrs. Altiser at 660-947-3361, ext. 382 and she will be able to forward your message on to her.

THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING…

Unfortunately Putnam County continues to receive oodles and oodles of snow.  Because of this the bus company only able to send their buses on hard surfaces only.  I appreciate your understanding in this matter.  It is out of our control and we just wanted to tell you that we appreciate your understanding.  Hopefully, it won’t be long before the snow melts, dries up and the weather improves!!!!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Did You know that: Hallmark has over 1330 different cards specifically for Valentine's Day, and that children ages 6 to 10 exchange more than 650 million Valentine's cards with teachers, classmates, and family members.  Here’s a Valentine poem that might just make you smile!

Today I Got a Valentine
Today I Got a Valentine
from everyone but Kay.
But that's alright...
I never liked her that much anyway.
She never trades her Oreos.
She isn't good at catch.
She doesn't like my favorite bands.
Her socks don't often match.

She doesn't play computer games.
She wears her hair in braids.
She's something of a teacher's pet
and always gets good grades.

She dots her i's with little hearts.
She's always reading books.
Whenever I'm around, she gives me
such confusing looks.

But, oh my goodness, here comes Kay,
and what is this I see?
It seems she has an extra special
Valentine for me.

It's big and red has the words
"Will you be mine today?"
I always said there's no one else
I like as much as Kay.
