Sharing Books With Your Beginning Reader

by Julie Halley

March 09, 2010

Spring has almost sprung!  Everything around us will begin to turn green and plants will start to bloom.  Now is the perfect time to set aside 10-15 minutes a day to spend with your child.  What better way to spend time with your child than to read a book.

Now is the time to read about places you may want to visit this summer, read about activities the family may want to participate in, read about your child's favorite athlete, cars, animals, or just read directions for games you may want to play with your child.  Whatever you choose to read, incorporate your child in the process.  Every few sentences, ask your young reader what you just read about to check for understanding.

I am going to list a few popular children's books that may be of interest to you and your child.

  • any Dr. Seuss book is fun to read
  • Alexander, Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday by Judith Viorst
  • Alexander, Who's Not Going to Move by Judith Viorst
  • any book by Margaret Wise Brown
  • I'll Love You Forever, I'll Love You For Always by Robert Munsch
  • any book by Gail Gibbons---she writes many  non-fiction books that explain how, why, when, and where
  • I Just Forgot by Mercer Mayer
  • I Need You, Dear Dragon by Margaret Hillert
  • If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give a Moose a Muffin by Laura Numeroff
  • The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash by Trinka H. Noble
  • Magic Tree House Adventure Series by Mary Pope Osborne
  • any book by Marc Brown is fun to read with colorful illustrations

Take turns reading with your child and enjoy the quiet, relaxed time together.  Take this opportunity to have a conversation with your child to discuss words and sounds.
