APRIL 20TH IS A VERY SPECIAL DATE FOR YOUR CALENDAR
April 20th has been set aside to thank all the people that so generously donate their time, their resources and their support for the S.O.A.R. Before and Afterschool Program. Our theme for the evening will be “Appreciation Fiesta,” and it will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the high school commons. Dinner will be provided that evening. Please mark your calendars for this evening and join in the celebration to show our appreciation to those that are so supportive of our program. Please complete and return the attached reservation form so we may have a proper head count for dinner. They MUST be returned no later than Monday, April 12th.
EVENTS THIS WEEK
The weather has been very nice this week, allowing the students to get outside and play. Miss Roberts was back this week to share many of her favorite books. The students learned about the U.S. Census and why it is so important to return the Census surveys. The students also had the opportunity their own mock census reports. They practiced by interviewing each other and submitting their information.
Several new books were purchased for the students to read and enjoy. Many of the books are on the Book Adventure online list for book reports. The online book reports have been a great addition to our program this year, providing an additional opportunity for our students to complete their classroom book report quotas.
The students have completed Flat Stanleys that will be sent to locations throughout the world over the next few months. This should prove to be a fun activity for the students, allowing them to “travel” to locations all over the world. Stay tuned to hear about all the places that Flat Stanley goes over the next few months.
Students visited Mrs. Christian in the high school on Friday to do a cook project. All the flour and sugar and butter ended up in wonderful batches of sugar cookies. The students enjoyed the activity—and the end result included decorating and sampling.
And, last but not least, several more students are getting closer to achieving their Gold Reading Certificates. The new book purchases have spurred some to read more and work even harder. Remember that all students that achieve their Gold Reading Certificates will be rewarded with a special field trip at the end of the year.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK KIDS!!!!!!!!
EVENTS COMING UP NEXT WEEK
Remember that Thursday, April 1st is an early out day with school dismissing at 12:45 p.m. There will be no school on Friday. School is closed for what is left of our Spring Break.
The students will be visiting Putnam State Bank on Thursday, April 1st. A note will be on the door to let you know when we will return. They will leave the S.O.A.R. facility around 3:30 p.m. and will be back in time for the students that ride the S.O.A.R. bus to ride home.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT…
When traveling to Columbia this week for an afterschool meeting, I noticed daffodils covering a hillside along the highway. What absolute beauty with the various shades of yellow that each flower displayed as they stretched their blooms high, gently bobbing in the wind.
The blooms reminded me of our children. Each child is a single bloom on a single stalk—stretching and growing each day toward adulthood. Their “colors,” like the daffodils, vary making them unique and a superb work of art. It truly is amazing to see the growth in the students in our program. Thank you so much for sharing them with us and allowing us to make a difference in their lives.
Have a great weekend!!!
