As the New School Year Begins...
Welcome, parents, to a new school year! We are off and running through another school year. Time seems to pass more quickly each year than it did the year before. The look of our school’s Title 1 program has changed a little. We are still a school-wide program which means that we are able to serve any student for the year or just for a short time; whatever is needed to help meet the students’ needs. Each Title 1 room has also acquired several new computers—which we have not had before. Students seem to get more excited about learning when technology is involved. We will be able to use the Read Naturally computer program with our Title classes. We will also be able to access our reading program’s website, which has many reading activities for each grade level.
In First grade, we are currently working on the short /a/ sound, word family words such as –an, can, fan, Nan, pan, etc., and several high frequency words: the, go, & on. The students are also practicing their printing skills. ‘Practice makes perfect.’
In Third grade, we are reviewing all the short vowel sounds as well as the long vowel sounds. We are practicing how to segment words to listen to individual sounds, working with blends, and practicing how to recognize words we call sight words such as was, the, why, what, where, etc. (these are words that cannot be sounded out).
Please practice reading skills with your child as often as you can. Some reading materials will be sent home at different times throughout the year for you and your child to practice. Reading is one of the most important things a child or adult can learn to do.
