Art and Music Unite
Winter Gala 2011
The arts are alive and well in Putnam County. The high school Fine Arts Department put on a combination art show and winter concert on an unseasonably mild evening, Saturday, December 10, 2011. Nearly 100 quilts, pillows and other handmade textile creations filled the high school commons. Watching students interact with their parents and friends and discussing their projects was so much fun. For many of the 97 high school art students who had crafted these items it was their first exposure to sewing. Both young men and women took equally well to the task of learning how to operate a sewing machine and manipulate fabrics.
Perhaps the proudest accomplishment of my art students is their collaboration on a quilt to be raffled in support of the school’s all weather track project. One hundred individual blocks were created by students and joined to create a large quilt in their school colors of royal blue and white. Mrs. Linda Davis donated her time and talent as we raced to complete this project in time for the event. Each block is as unique as the student who made it and is truly a one of a kind piece of textile art. Their goal is to earn $1,000 for the track project at one dollar per chance. The winner of the quilt will be announced following our Spring Evening with the Arts event planned for April 21st. Please feel free to contact me at tpartridge@putnamcountyr1.net with any questions about the quilt (and to buy some raffle tickets!). All parents and community members are also encouraged to drop by the school to see what we have going in the art room.
