Autumnal Greetings!

What a wonderful season is fall! Although it seemed to creep up on us far too soon this year, it still fills me with childlike delight as colors grow warmer and the air grows colder. This is the time for homemade soups and pumpkin pies; no wonder it’s my favorite season!

Speaking of favorites, we have begun my favorite unit in 7th and 8th grade Comm. Arts – Grammar! Being the word-nerd that I am, sharing my love for the eight parts of speech and their many functions is a lot of fun for me. I realize that this is not true for most, especially twelve to fourteen-year olds, so I tried to think of a fun activity to open this unit. After a short internet search, I chose to use a post-it note based lesson to introduce the most common word in any dictionary – nouns! The kids really enjoyed getting to stick those little yellow bits of paper to anything and everything, even each other, as they demonstrated their knowledge of those words that represent people, places, things, and ideas (you guessed it – nouns). Now, an activity like this can get out of hand in a heartbeat, but I am proud to say that we had nothing but fun all day! Mrs. McDonald was kind enough to take the time to come to my classroom to snap a few pics, to share with you all. What you’ll find are a bunch of 7th graders having so much fun that they didn’t even know they were learning. (The practice exercises completed after the initial post-it activity proved it!) Browse through all of the pics for a guaranteed smile!

Spending my days with your young students is what keeps me going, I’m sure! I appreciate my time with them and look forward to all the fun and learning we will do together all year long.
