7th Graders Share the Fun of Reading

We are doing a lot of reading in 7th and 8th grade ELA and the kids are loving it!

In 8th grade we are reading historical fiction, a very popular book by Gary Paulsen titled “Canyons.” The kids find it an easy read and that makes for a safe environment to cover such confusing topics as theme, voice, and author’s purpose. I have found that if the kids are struggling with the text itself, then they struggle even more with key concepts. This book is quite a stretch from other Paulsen books, as it deals with a murder mystery and the supernatural – Native American style. It is a riveting tale and when we read it together, the kids are so engaged that one could hear a pin drop (if I didn’t have carpeted floors, anyway.)

We are having so much fun with Folklore in 7th grade that we just had to share! Mrs. Salisbury and her pre-K students were so very welcoming when we showed up with only a phone calls notice. That morning we had previously read an engaging tale from France called "Quackling." I read aloud these tales to my students, but this one had what could be called a "chorus," so everybody joined in on these sections and we ended up enjoying this tale far more than any others we had read. Because of the fun nature of the tale and the fact that the kids were so very enthused to read it aloud, I thought it would be a good idea to share with the pre-K students. (We had done this before and it was a huge success!) Mrs. Salisbury was very inviting when I called and once we got there, so were the kids! We read our tale to them and they received it with much delight. Once we were done, one of the little girls ran to one of my students and hugged him; he was quite embarrassed but pretty proud of himself, I imagine, to have made that little girl so very happy. We learned that this week, the kids’ letter of study was the letter Q, so our little visit was even more satisfying! This was mere coincidence, as I had no idea that was the letter of the week. It was just such a great moment that I had to share with you all. The pictures were kindly shared by Mrs. Salisbury, so I’ve included them.

I hope you all are as proud of “our” kids as I am! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I’m just glad to be here! Nothing I’ve ever done has been this rewarding!
