Keeping Tradition Alive

I had the honor of continuing the work of Major Duane Crawford this morning.  Mrs. Oden's and Mrs. Chapman's classes were taught how to fold the United States flag as well as how to raise and lower it on the flag poll.  In this training we discussed proper flag etiquette as described in the National Department of Americanism pamphlet distributed by the VFW.  The students also observed two YouTube videos demonstrating the proper method and description of folding the flag.  One of the videos was 4th grade boy scouts demonstrating proper flag folding technique.

We took time to discuss exactly what the flag represents, and the students asked several good questions about our military, our freedom, and our rights as citizens.  It was impressive to observe and hear the concerns of our 5th grade students.  They were concerned and determined to understand how to treat the flag with respect, and equally determined to take their privilege seriously and competently.  As I told Mrs. Oden and Mrs. Chapman, these students are only seven to eight years away of becoming the generation that will be the defenders of our freedom.  I'm very proud of our Putnam County students and teachers.
