STEM and Reading Enrichment

Recently, Mrs. Valentine's Reading Enrichment classes worked on a STEM project.  Students had to read the directions and follow them correctly in order for the activity to work as hypothesized.  They used wire salvaged from notebooks and straws that Mrs. Valentine purchased to manipulate various objects into 3D geometric shapes such as a square, triangle, rectangle, hexagon, and an octagon as well as other shapes.  When finished, they dipped their shapes into a concoction of oil and soap to form a bubble solution.  They discovered despite the shapes of the wand, eventually the shapes would turn into a circle and float away.  We were sure that we would have several different shaped bubbles to report and although they all appeared to start in the shape of the object, the bubbles eventually preferred the spherical shape.  Great discussion was had and journal entries were made and kids were tickled to get outside for a while and blow some awesome bubbles.
