Five Finger Rule for Choosing Books for Your Child
Five Finger Rule for Choosing Books for Your Child
1. Find a book that you and your child think you would like to read.
2. Open to the middle of the book and select a page that is not the first page of the book.
3. Read the page.
4. For every word your child can't read or has to sound out (or if your child doesn't know what the word is), hold up one finger.
5. Use this scale to tell if the book is too easy or too hard for your child:
0-1 Fingers- The book is too easy.
2-3 Fingers- The book is "just right>'
4 Fingers- The book might be a little difficult, so read it slowly.
5 Fingers or more- The book might be too hard for now, so come back soon and try it again.
Reading should be fun for you and your child. Choosing the correct book is important. It keeps your child wanting to read more and both of you will enjoy the time spent together.
Happy reading,
Ms. Wood
