Resolve to Raise a Reader

Many New Year's resolutions involve developing healthy habits🍎or quitting unhealthy ones.🍩🍭 Resolving to be a lifelong reader📚 and raise one is a worthwhile habit and achievable goal that will serve you and your children well.

Did you know that just 20 minutes a day of reading📖 at home can be the difference between high achievers🏆 and struggling students?

Here are some tips to make daily reading a habit in your home and set your child up for success🎯

📚Be a great example. Children imitate what they see.

📚Keep books, newspapers and magazines in places where they are accessible to your child. Breakfast table, bedside and bathroom are a few common areas to read.

📚 You can find reading on the road, on billboards and signs, in the store, and at the restaurant. Play a game to find words when you are out and about or take a look at home for words on everyday items like cereal boxes, toothpaste, and household appliances.

📚Read every day. Set aside 20 minutes each night before bed, or at a time that works best with your schedule, to read with your child. If they are old enough to read on their own, set a timer and then follow up by asking questions about what they read.

📚Keep your focus on progress. If you notice that your child has difficulty with reading, sight, comprehension, hearing or speech, be sure to let your child's teacher know. Early intervention is best to help your child become a confident reader.

📚Limit screen time. If you're going to use electronic devices, try using apps to encourage reading. For example: Epic!, Bookster, Kindle, Google Play Books, Nook, Wattpad, Oodles, etc.

📚Last, but not least, make a trip to your local library. Look at books together. Ask questions about what they read. Encourage your child to bring their library book from school home to read.
