A Lost, But Necessary Skill

A Lost, But Necessary Skill

As I work with struggling readers on many different skill sets, I have noticed a ‘modern-day’ pattern. Many elementary children cannot rhyme. For adults, rhyming words may seem very simple but it is necessary when it comes to reading patterns, spelling patterns, and listening patterns. I am not just talking about: hat-cat-sat-bat-etc. or hit-sit-fit-bit-kit-etc. I am talking about multi-syllable words such as parked-barked-marked-etc.and beyond.

Rhyming is truly an early pre-reading skill that is necessary in many daily activities of adults that we, as adults, take for granted. If a person would think about it, there are rhyming words in song lyrics, cheers, ad campaign jingles, books, and yes,--poetry. Young developing minds need to be exposed to those children’s songs that chant a rhyming verse over and over, no matter how annoying it may be to you as the parent to listen to them. Those rhyming verses are going to help those children become better readers as those brains begin to be exposed to the reading process. Students need exposure to all the “old-fashioned” nursery rhymes that many of us grew up with. I have many students each year that have never heard the regular nursery rhymes or fairy tales of our youth. These children are missing out on all the pre-reading skills that those types of activities build. Please take some time to teach these type of activities to your children so that your first, second, third, or fourth grader does not grow up struggling to rhyme simple words.
