Scientific Methodology is Clicking in Room 13!

As students are preparing for comprehension checks next week, we have started using Plicker cards in Mr. Watt's science classroom in a fun and practical way.  Plickers is an assessment tool made by a teacher who was looking for a quick and simple way to check student understanding. This assessment tool allows teachers to collect on-the-spot formative assessment data without the need to have students use whiteboards, devices, or paper and pencil.  Simply put, students hold up a card that has a QR code on it when prompted by a teacher question.  The teacher scans student cards using a phone or an iPad, and the direction of the cards correspond to answer choices.  Student results can be shown collectively on the Promethean board at the front of the room, and the teacher can go back and look at individual student results later.  The power lies in the instant feedback for both the teacher and the students, which fuels discussion about why students picked the correct or incorrect response.  No one but the teacher has to know who got the answer right or wrong, but everyone knows what percentage of the class got it right before moving forward.
