Kindergarten News--Jan. 18, 2019

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a wonderful snowy weekend!  The weather has been wild this past week.

Communication Arts:  This week we completed week two of Theme 5: “Let’s Count!”  The students met a new alphafriend, Gertie Goose, for the letter Gg, and they reviewed the letters Vv and Pp.  They continued practicing blending and counting phonemes (individual sounds) to make words, and we reviewed our high-frequency words as well as learned new words:  go, now, there, & only. We also discussed story structure (beginning, middle, and end) and practiced summarizing stories we read. In addition, we talked about rhyming and naming words.  Lastly, we practiced building/blending short a words as well as building sentences using our high-frequency words.

Math:  This week we reviewed classifying and categorizing and wrapped up this topic with our test.

We’ve made it to 100 days!  We have been counting every day, working toward 100 school days.  If weather cooperates, the 100th day of school will be Friday, February 1st, and we will be doing a few activities to celebrate!  We are asking the students to each bring 100 small edible items (please count them out at home) to school by Thursday, January 31st.  (such as Cheerios, Fruit Loops, raisins, miniature marshmallows, M&M’s, chocolate chips, pretzels, animal crackers, etc.). We will mix all of our items together to make a trail mix to eat during snack time.  Please remember to wash hands when you and/or your child handle the food to reduce spreading germs and illness.  Thank you!

Valentine’s Day Party:  Our Valentine’s Day party is coming soon!   Please help your child find/make/decorate a Valentine’s Day box to bring to school for Valentine’s cards/candy.  We will not be making Valentine’s boxes in the classroom or in art class.  Each year the students are very proud and eager to show off what they made at home with their parents. Valentines boxes need to be at school by February 13.
