Excitement in the Physical Science Classroom!
Launch the media gallery 1 playerFreshmen have been participating in some exciting science demonstrations in Mr. Watt's classroom this fall. They are studying physical and chemical properties and changes of a variety of elements and substances, including hydrogen and corn starch. Students learned that compounds often have properties which are very different from the elements contained in the compound. For example, students used a single replacement chemical reaction to isolate and then ignite hydrogen. Hydrogen is a primary component of water (H2O). Hydrogen is explosive, yet water is used to put out fires. Another common substance, corn starch, is not flammable. However, when it is turned into a cloud of fine dust and oxygen has a chance to surround and interact with the increased surface area of tiny corn starch particles, it is highly flammable.
