Where do sunflower seeds come from?

By Joy Butler

November 10, 2007

Where do sunflower seeds come from? This is a question that was answered in Mrs. Butler's first grade class. They had all eaten sunflower seeds, but did not know where they came from. So, I brought a real sunflower to school to let my children see where sunflower seeds come from. We all looked at the plant and marveled at how perfectly it was formed. The seeds were growing in the middle of the flower and were in a circle. The children were all given the opportunity to take a section of the flower and pull the seeds out. Mrs. Butler will take them home, clean and roast them and we will enjoy eating them.

Questions are a fine way of learning!
