Smokebusters "kick" off their year

Mrs. Sands

October 09, 2007

Smokebusters started their year with a Tobacco PUNT football night on Friday, October 5.  The purpose was to promote the benefits of being tobacco free through tobacco facts being read and promotional items given during the game. The crowd was encouraged to sign up for a chance to participate in the punting contest during half-time.  Children were given stickers that said "I'll croak if you smoke" and "Smell Better, Don't Smoke."  Throughout the game, Smokebusters and members of the varsity Cheerleading squad threw out mini footballs to the crowd.  The Cheerleaders performed a dance to the Ghost busters song with a Smokebusters twist.  The winners of the three age groups, during the punt contest, were given T-shirts with anti-smoking messages.  All other contestants were given a choice of a mini football or stadium cup.

Smokebusters would like to thank all the individuals and groups who made this event possible.

Putnam County Smokebusters have several events planned through the year including a Tobacco-Free Throw (similar to the Tobacco PUNT), during the basketball season, December 14. They are planning on having a dinner or breakfast appreciation meal for all businesses in the city limits who provide a smoke-free environment. New signs for the school were also made and will soon be displayed. They are able to provide the promotional and other items through a grant they received last spring from the Missouri Foundation For Health. Be prepared to see and hear Smokebusters messages throughout the year.
