Language Arts I

This is a required ninth grade English course, which consists of mechanics, usage, grammar, and spelling skills.  These fundamentals are covered to clearly write literary analysis and personal essays.  Students will study short stories, novels, and plays focusing on plot, characterization, and theme.  (2 semesters)

Applied Communications

Applied Communications is a school-to-work preparatory class.  Reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills and the applicability of each to the workplace are emphasized.  Lessons will be structured to broaden students’ knowledge of employment opportunities and employers’ expectations.  Students will participate in mock interviews and job shadowing. (2 semesters)

Prerequisite: Language Arts I and Language Arts II.  Keyboarding is strongly recommended.

American Literature

Students study American literature from historical and thematic perspectives.  Mechanics, usage, grammar, and vocabulary will coincide with literature studies.  Students are expected to read independently and write literary analysis essays.  Class participation is essential.

Prerequisites: Language Arts I and II with a “B” average recommended. (2 semesters)

Independent Reading

Students will choose books of their own preference for this course.  Each book will be assigned points based on length, grade level and font size.  Daily points comprise approximately 20% of grade based on class conduct.  Upon completion of a novel each student is expected to participate in a one-on-one discussion with the teacher before points are awarded as completed.  This course offers students the time to enjoy literature of their choosing while expanding vocabulary and fluency.  (1st semester)

Grades: 9-12

Against the Wall

This course will offer students the privilege of crossing time and place to study individuals who have for various reasons been put against the proverbial wall.  It will include short stories, novels, and selected films that will enhance a knowledge base of cultural diversity and atrocities from numerous periods of history.  Students will be expected to read independently, participate in class discussions and think critically. (2nd semester)

Grades: 9-12
