Be a Great Reading Partner

It’s no fun to read when forced to or when embarrassed and ashamed to read.  Building trust and supporting a young reader is crucial as a reading partner.  Here are a few tips for becoming a great reading partner:

Be patient and encouraging.

Read aloud and track the words with your fingers as you are reading.

Read the same stories over and over.  Try reading the stories in different ways, in other voices to make it fun and interesting.

Ask questions during reading to check for comprehension.

Pick books that are the right level for your young reader. 5+ mistakes on a page is an indicator that the book is too hard.

No mistakes or one mistake on a page is an indicator that the book might be too easy.

Gently correct mistakes and read the whole sentence again.

Give positive feedback and tell him/her they are doing a great job.

NEVER: Bribe, nag, criticize, judge, or add pressure by making a big deal about reading.

Reading is fun.
