Self Monitoring & Self Correcting

Many families spend a considerable amount of time reading together but may wonder how to best help their child as they learn to read. One of the best thing and the hardest thing to do is to allow a reader to make mistakes. Making mistakes is a natural part of learning, but noticing those errors and correcting them is a vital part of reading. Noticing when a sound or word doesn't make sense is called self-monitoring. While correcting these errors is called self-correction. Together these skills are a powerful force in comprehension or understand what is read - the true reason we read.
