FAQ: What Happens When my Child is Placed on Quarantine?

FAQ: Parents

What happens when I am notified that my child is a close contact and has to be quarantined?

  • If your child is placed on quarantine by the Health Department, you should immediately contact your building secretary or principal and coach to let them know.

  • Your student will be expected to complete assignments from home during this time.

  • Your child’s teacher(s) will record their lessons on Google Classroom LIVE each day.

  • Your student is expected to show up for their class online each day during the regularly scheduled time to count for attendance. MS/HS Bell Schedule (2020-2021)

  • (High School): If your child works during part of the school day or after and is considered an essential worker, they may leave the house to go to work and come home.

  • Keep in Mind -- we are following the rules on quarantine, we do not make them.

If my child is an athlete or involved in band, choir, extracurricular clubs and activities, how does this affect my student?

  • If your student is an athlete or part of an extracurricular club, such as FFA, FBLA, DECA, Interact, Art Club, Gaming Club, etc. they will be staying at home during quarantine and not participating in any activities, games, practices or events. MSHSAA does allow virtual practices if the coach chooses to participate.

  • If your child is in band, choir, Advertising Class, Journalism Class/Club, etc, your student is still expected to complete their assignments from home. However, your student is not permitted to leave your house during quarantine (unless they are going to work as an essential worker). Your student will be given an alternative assignment to make up for missing that event that would have normally been counted for a grade.

How do their assignments and education change while on quarantine?

  • Homebound students will be expected to attend class virtually and are expected to watch any videos that the teacher posts to Google classroom if they cannot make the LIVE session.

  • If your student is unable to meet LIVE, you or your student will need to let their teacher know ahead of time.

  • Your student will use email, Google Classroom, and Google Meet during class time to communicate with their teacher.

  • We have added Go Guardian for screen monitoring, especially if they have to take a test. Teachers are able to access student screens between 8:15 am - 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.

  • Your student needs to log in during each class period like they were physically in the building to obtain their lesson and assignments and be counted in attendance for the class.

High School Distance Learning Suggestions:

  • Students who are on quarantine due to being a close contact are still required to log on to their normally scheduled classes each day at the beginning of each class to get their class notes and assignments.

  • Students and teachers are still expected to cover the same amount of work as if they were physically here in the building.

Is my student able to attend any special events like assemblies, parades, games, etc?

No. They are under quarantine. Aside from being an essential worker and having to report to work if they are symptom free, they are to remain at home.

How does my student get their papers from school if an assignment wasn’t delivered electronically?

Let your school secretary know when you could have someone available to pick up their work. If their work cannot be picked up in a timely manner, please let us know so we can get those assignments delivered to you.

What does my student do if they are having technical difficulties?

Let your child’s teacher and principal know. Also email Mr. Schnakenberg with any technical difficulties. Email Mr. Schnakenberg at aschnakenberg@putnamcountyr1.net or call at 660-947-3361 ext 389.

How might this affect my student emotionally?

You might not notice much of a difference. Everyone handles these situations differently. Your child might feel bored, lonely, overwhelmed, tired, stressed, sad, tired, depressed, anxious, etc. You might have feelings of frustration, just wanting things to be back to normal. These are all normal emotions. The important thing to realize is that this is a temporary situation. You might have questions that there may not be answers for. Keep in mind that your teachers, administration, coaches, and staff are on your side, and we want to do everything we can to support you. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and ask for help.
