Cosmic Math Fun in First!
Once in a while, the teacher stars align and a lesson just makes itself. That happened in first grade today. We were celebrating a students half birthday, which we do for those having June and July birthdays. He graciously brought treats for us to enjoy. As I presented the math lesson about data and graphing, I recalled a math activity using Christmas brownies I'd seen on social media and thought - perfect!! We used the birthday treats as way to reinforce the concept of accurately representing data with tally marks, on a bar graph and then decorating a tree with ornaments matching our data. Finally we were able to answer questions regarding our data. Thanks to the birthday boy for allowing us to use his treats for educational purposes!
