I am occasionally asked, “Why do I need to learn this?”. My response is often “To graduate from high school so you can pursue your dreams”. I remind students that there is more to learning than just learning content. Every day in math class we are learning perseverance, patience, attention to detail, and problem-solving which are skills that are useful in any content area or job.
Because we have distance learning thrown into the mix this year, there are additional skills to be learned. Students say it is hard to learn at home and it is. It is tempting when things are hard to get discouraged and give up, but this is the time to work harder to learn. Maybe this inconvenient time is to make us all stronger and cause us to be more independent learners. Please encourage your students that they can do the hard stuff and will be better for doing it!
Wishing all my students a relaxing break from doing the hard stuff!!
