Midwest Author, Brian Spielbauer, speaks to PCMS students.

Midwest author, Mr. Brian Spielbauer, stopped by the Putnam County Middle School on Thursday, September 16, to donate his latest book to our library for students to enjoy and to give them some words of wisdom and encouragement for their education journey.

Brian grew up on a farm just outside Osterdock, Iowa. He graduated from Guttenberg High School in 1991. After graduation, he pursued his education at William Penn University, graduating with his Bachelor's degree in 1996. Upon graduation, he started his career in education, as a Junior High science teacher for 4 years. While teaching, he continued to pursue his master's degree. In 2002, he graduated from Bemidji State University.

From 2000-2012, Brian coached college basketball. In 2012, he stepped into the role of Athletic Director for the college until 2019.

Brian began writing his first book, The Demon's Chamber in 2009. He did not find a publisher until 2016!

Mr. Spielbauer spent part of the morning talking to our students about the writing process but also spoke with them about perseverance and positive self-talk. Three important things that helped him keep going as a writer.

He encouraged students to write every day, one word, one sentence, one paragraph at a time. Just keep writing and trust the process. Brian says, "you can't edit the unwritten sentence."

In life and in the writing process, Mr. Spielbauer has experienced lots of "No's, computer failures, and many obstacles to overcome. He spoke to our students, telling them that you have to persevere and be tough. Many people will tell you that your dream won't happen, that you can't do it, and that you're crazy for trying. "Never let the odds keep you from doing what in your heart you know you were meant to do!"
