All about Pumpkins!

Mrs. Jones' 2nd graders have been busy learning all about pumpkins and experimenting with them.

We started with three pumpkins of different shapes and sizes. We came up with our questions that we wanted to find out and then formed our hypothesis. Does the size of the pumpkin Matter? How many seeds will be inside and will the biggest pumpkin way the most? We then moved on to test our questions and gather information. We labeled and weighed each pumpkin and wrote down the weight. Next, we put all the weights in a table from least to greatest. We ended up finding out that the smallest pumpkin weighed the most at 14.8 pounds.
After that, we (I) cut open the pumpkins and each group pulled all the seeds out and counted them! We graphed each pumpkins total and discovered that our pumpkin that came in 2nd place for weight and was the tallest had the most seeds. It had 507 seeds!
For the conclusion students chose to write  just because the size of the pumpkin is bigger doesn't mean it will have more seeds in it or weigh the most.

Today, we took our seeds and created a diagram of the inside and outside of a pumpkin, labeling the skin, rib, pulp, brains, vine, leaf, and seeds. Students were very surprised to learn that a pumpkin had ribs let alone a brain!!

We would like to thank Kirk H. and Samantha S., Brandi H., and Toni H. for donating the pumpkins to our class!
