Nancy Owings: Teacher Spotlight
Mrs. Nancy Owings is in year 15 of correcting grammar, grading research papers, and educating high school students in English Language Arts (ELA) at Putnam County. She says, "this is HOME."
When we asked Mrs. Owings who inspired her to pursue a career in education, she said, "my own children."
Mrs. Owings, a 1980 PCHS graduate, is one of our #HomegrownHeroes. She has been married to her high school sweetheart, Gerald, for 41 years. They have 3 children, Rande, Nolan, and Koda, all PCHS grads. Mrs. Owings says her children are the products of many learning experiences and taught her how three children from the same home and parents can be SO different!
This is what Mrs. Owings had to say about her journey to a career in education: "After high school, I went to Mizzou for a year, and then Gerald and I decided to move home and buy a farm. While I intended to finish college with a nursing degree at Northeast Missouri State University (what is now Truman), I kept putting it off as life happened. A degree would wait nearly twenty-five years. It was at that time when I finally finished an Associate's degree through Indian Hills, Bachelor's degree through Buena Vista, and a Master's degree through Southern New Hampshire University."
When Mrs. Owings isn't at school, you can catch her with a great book in her hands. She loves reading various works and authors, being outside, spoiling their grandchildren, and watching hometown sporting events.
Thank you, Mrs. Owings, for making Putnam home!
